BEFORE The Sensitives Book 0 eBook Dawn Rae Miller
You guys? Before by Dawn Rae Miller is a freaking adorable short story prequel to Larkstorm. While nothing major happens in the mere 34 pages this short story takes place, it's a good place to start the series. Right now it's free, so if you're intrigued by Larkstorm, you can get a sense of Dawn's writing style, the world, and the characters in this short. I loved it. It made me want to read Larkstorm all over again!I really liked the little hints of what might be happening; I've read the first book and now what is happening, but still, it's freaky in this story because you feel like something is way, way off. But I really liked the little connections between Beck and Lark, and I loved the dancing. It made me all melty.
Passage from the story, because I loved it:
"The way that bow flutters off your shoulder reminds me of a bird," Becky says, dipping his head toward mine so that his mouth grazes my ear. His breath feels warm against the side of my face and I shudder a tiny bit. "Birdie."
He laughs.
Step. Step. Spin. "What?"
"Birdie. That's what I'm going to call you."
I tilt my face up to his, but he's staring off past my shoulder. "I didn't realize I needed a nickname."
Flashes of crimson, gold, eggplant, and emerald whirl past. Next to them, my dress must look dull. Shimmering ecru with a thick, black band along an asymmetric hem that exposes my knees. It's not brilliant, but as my best friend Kyra proclaimed, it's stunning. Or at least I hope it is.
"Everyone needs a nickname. Birdie." The word rolls off his tongue.
I shift my weight as he spins me beneath his arm. When he catches my free hand, I squeeze it hard. "So, I should come up with a nickname for you?"
He laughs again. "I'm bigger than a nickname, don't you know?"

Lark and Beck have been invited to Lark's brother's Binding Ceremony. Lark is not comfortable with being in the public eye, even though her mother is the head of the State. However, she is nervously excited to see her mother and meet her brother's new mate, Annalise. At the party, she is unprepared for the hostility shown towards Beck, and a dark undercurrent weaving it's way through the merriment. Will she be able to follow her dreams, or will the plans her mother have for her take her on another course?
This short story introduces the characters of Lark and Beck three years before the events in Larkstorm. Having read Larkstorm, I was excited to get a chance to read this short story. I was not disappointed! Even though it is a short story, it gives some insight into the events that are to unfold in Larkstorm; The hostility shown to Beck, and the strangely menacing undercurrent that pervades the Binding Ceremony, is a chilling forerunner to what is to come. I was also introduced to Lark's brother, Callum. I found him to be just as scary as I did in Larkstorm! Annalise is different in this story; she seems more friendly and treats Lark as her best friend, even though they've only just met.
Lark's mother is the head of the State, and as such, she is a very powerful woman. She is also one scary lady! I found her to be not very maternal, and seems to have plans for her daughter, which does not include Lark's own wishes and dreams.
There is also a bonus of having the first 50 pages of Larkstorm to read, for those who have not read it yet. I recommend you read this short story first, and then read Larkstorm. However, if you have already read Larkstorm, I still recommend you read this story, as it explains why certain things happen in Larkstorm.
I am now looking forward to reading the next book in the series, and hope that Dawn doesn't leave me hanging for much longer!
This short prequel gives so much background to Larkstorm and the whole Sensitives series. Bravo to Dawn Rae Miller for giving us readers a back story that really enhances her exciting tale.
As with all YA shorts it is better to be familiar with the characters in the first book in order to understand the dynamics between the characters as well as the back story with them. This short does give a good picture of how Lark feels about some of her relationships, especially with her mother.
I've heard about this story and decided to jump into the free "Before" book - wow. I'm seriously hooked and will be reading the 'rest of the story.' This is what smart authors do - give us readers a sample big enough make purchasing decisions. Thanks DRM.
